Project overview: glass balustrade, Bishop’s Stortford

This Bishop’s Stortford project involved a frameless glass balustrade for a private client, commissioned directly rather than through a contractor or design and build company. The client had already approached multiple companies about the job and been told it wasn’t possible. Geo Glaze, glazing contractor covering Hertfordshire, London, and Essex, took on the project, reassured the client it could be done properly, and delivered a 17.5mm toughened laminated glass balustrade on a powder coated Q-Railing system, colour matched to the kitchen cupboards.

The brief

The client wanted a frameless glass balustrade that would tie in with the kitchen finish rather than sit as a separate, generic fitting. The brief covered:

A glass balustrade solution where other glazing companies had already said no

A Q-Railing channel powder coated to match the exact colour of the kitchen cupboards

17.5mm toughened laminated glass for strength, safety, and a frameless look

Direct client communication throughout, with no design and build company or contractor in between

Why other companies turned it down

Before contacting Geo Glaze, the client had been told by multiple glazing companies that the job wasn’t achievable. This is a common outcome when a project needs a genuine bespoke solution rather than an off the shelf balustrade kit: colour matched powder coating,

exact site measurements, and a frameless glass specification all need to be handled together, not treated as separate add ons.

Geo Glaze reviewed the brief, confirmed the powder coated Q-Railing system could be colour matched to the client’s kitchen cupboards, and confirmed the 17.5mm toughened laminated glass specification would give the strength needed for the application. The job went ahead on that basis.

Our approach

Powder coated Q-Railing, colour matched to the kitchen

The Q-Railing channel was powder coated to match the exact colour of the client’s kitchen cupboards, so the glass balustrade reads as part of the kitchen design rather than a separate fixture. This kind of colour matching is one of the details that gets missed or refused by companies working from standard stock finishes only.

17.5mm toughened laminated glass

The balustrade uses 17.5mm toughened laminated glass, giving the strength and safety needed for a frameless application where the glass itself provides the guarding. Laminated construction means the glass holds together even if a pane is damaged, which matters where the balustrade is the only barrier.

Working directly with the client

As this job came directly through the client rather than a contractor or design and build company, Geo Glaze managed the whole process personally: site survey, colour matching, manufacture, and install, with the client kept informed at every stage after being turned away elsewhere.

The result

The client now has a frameless glass balustrade in 17.5mm toughened laminated glass, with a powder coated Q-Railing system colour matched exactly to their kitchen cupboards, on a job other glazing companies said couldn’t be done. Geo Glaze delivered it directly for the client from first enquiry through to completed install.
